GERRARD BARRET’S ‘SMALLTOWN’ PREMIERES ON TV3 THIS THURSDAY

Gerard Barrett’s three part tv drama series, Smalltown, premieres on TV3 this Thursday.

Smalltown tells the story of Conor (played by Charlie Kelly), a twenty something who leaves his small town in rural Ireland to emigrate to London in search of a better life. When circumstances bring him home years later, he discovers much has changed…

Created and directed by Barrett, the man behind ‘Glassland’ and ‘Pilgrim Hill’, the series stars Pat Shortt, Charlie Kelly, Pauline O’Driscoll, and Stephen O’Leary among others.

Smalltown underwent Sound post here at Ardmore Sound, where Brendan Rehill was the Sound Editor, and Ken Galvin was the Sound re-recording mixer.

Gerard Barrett's 'BRAIN ON FIRE' TO SCREEN AT TIFF

Gerard Barrett's 'Brain on Fire' has been announced for the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF).

Starring Chloe Grace Moretz, Carrie-Ann Moss, Richard Armitage and Tyler Perry, Brain on Fire follows Susannah, 'a rising journalist at the New York Post who mysteriously starts having seizures and hearing voices. As weeks go by and Susannah rapidly descends into insanity, she moves inexplicably from violence to catatonia. Following a series of outbursts, misdiagnoses, and a prolonged hospital stay, a lucky, last-minute intervention by one doctor finally gives her a diagnosis and hope to rebuild her life.'

Based on Susannah Cahalan's bestselling memoir, Brain on Fire: My Month of Madness, the Film underwent Sound Post Production here at Ardmore Sound.

‘THE SECRET SCRIPTURE’ AND ‘MAUDIE’ TO SCREEN AT TIFF

Jim Sherdan’s The Secret Scripture and Aisling Walsh’s Maudie will screen at this years Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF).

Directed by Jim Sheridan, The Secret Scripture will make its world premiere at the festival. Starring Rooney Mara (Carol), Vanessa Redgrave (Mission Impossible), Jack Reynor (Transformers: Age of Extinction) and Aidan Turner (The Hobbit), the film follows the discovery of a hidden memoir belonging to an elderly woman confined to a mental hospital. A memoir which reveals the history of her passionate yet tortured life, and of the religious and political upheavals in Ireland during the 1920s and ’30s…

Produced by Ferndale Films, the adaptation of Sebastian Barry’s award-winning 2008 novel was filmed on location in Dublin and Kilkenny.

Directed by five time IFTA nominee, Aisling Walsh, Maudie will also have a gala presentation at the festival.

Academy Award nominees Sally Hawkins (Happy-Go-Lucky, Blue Jasmine) and Ethan Hawke star in this true story of Maud Lewis, who overcame the physical challenge of juvenile rheumatoid arthritis to become one of Canada’s premier folk artists.

Produced by Parallel Films, Ardmore Sound also provided Foley and Final mix for Maudie.

'TRADERS' AVAILABLE ON DVD AND ON DEMAND FROM FRIDAY 12th AUGUST

Irish thriller ‘Traders’ will be released on DVD and on demand on August 12th.

Written and Directed by Rachael Moriarty and Peter Murphy, the film follows newly redundant Harry Fox who is approached by a former colleague with a new business proposition. Two people convert all their assets to cash, arrange to meet, dig one grave and fight to the death. Winner buries the loser and instantly doubles his value.

Can he persuade Harry to become a “Trader”?

Starring Killian Scott, John Bradley, Peter O’Meara, Nika McGuigan, Moe Dunford, and Barry Keoghan. Traders is a COCO Television production in association with Underground Films, with funding from Irish Film Board/Bord Scannán na hÉireann.

A Date For Mad Mary wins audience award at Gaze film festival

Ardmore Sound posted film, A Date For Mad Mary has been given the audience award at this years Gaze Film Festival.

Running from the 28th of July until the 1st of August, the International LGBT Film Festival took place in the Lighthouse cinema in Smithfeild, Dublin, and featured A Date For Mad Mary as this years secret screening.

Speaking on the films win, the Gaze Festival Programmer said "What an absolute thrill it is to have our Secret Screening A Date for Mad Mary as the Audience Award winner for this year’s festival. The audience howled with laughter from start to finish during the screening, and left with huge smiles on their faces. It is a pleasure to have such a strong and brilliant Irish film in the festival, and to have our audience agree with our choice of Secret Screening is of great reassurance!’

Directed by Darren Thornton (who co-wrote with brother Colin) and produced by Ed Guiney and Juliette Bonass, A Date for Mad Mary follows Mary McArdle’s quest to find a date to a friend’s wedding, following a stint in prison. Determined to prove her right to a plus one for the big day, Mary’s attempts at securing a date lead her into trouble and emotional challenges.

The film was recently named Best Irish Feature at this years Galway Film Fleadh.

A Date for Mad Mary is set for nationwide release on September 2nd.

‘A DATE FOR MAD MARY’ NAMED BEST IRISH FILM AT GALWAY FILM FLEADH

Ardmore Sound posted feature A Date for Mad Mary was named joint Best Irish Film at this years Galway Film Fleadh, sharing the honours with Peter Foott’s The Young Offenders.

Directed by Darren Thornton (who co-wrote with brother Colin) and produced by Ed Guiney and Juliette Bonass, A Date for Mad Mary is a tough and tender story about friendship, first love, and letting go of the glory days, which has been earning rave reviews by critics in the run up to this years Fleadh.

Lead actress Seána Kerslake was also awarded the Bingham Ray Award for new talent for her incredible performance in the film.

A Date for Mad Mary is set for nationwide release later this year. Ardmore Sound would like to congratulate all the cast and crew on the films well deserved success.

Critics praise 'A Date For Mad Mary' in first reviews

The first reviews of Ardmore Sound posted feature A Date for Mad Mary have been published, with critics effuse in their praise for the film.

Directed by Darren Thornton (who co-wrote with brother Colin) and produced by Ed Guiney and Juliette Bonass, A Date for Mad Mary is a tough and tender story about friendship, first love, and letting go of the glory days.

Variety called the film "a winning Irish charmer... that has all the makings of a crossover hit," going on to say that the film is "beautifully performed, warm yet melancholic.“

The Playlist singled out lead actress Seána Kerslake for her incredible turn in the film, stating that "in a perfect world it’s the sort of star-making performance that should garner attention on both sides of the Atlantic."

The film is set to screen at the Galway Film Fleadh this Friday at 6pm in the Town Hall, with Director Thornton and cast in attendance. Full details on that screening can be found here.

'Room' nominated for 2016 International Music + Sound Award

Steve Fanagan and Niall Brady's sound design work on Room has been nominated for the 2016 International Music + Sound Awards in the 'Sound Design in Film' category, this category aims to recognise 'creative use of sound and sound effects within a feature film'. Other nominees in the category include 'The Lobster', 'Kill Your Friends' and 'Nina Forever'.

The Music+Sound Awards, based out of London, are the only global awards programme to recognise and celebrate the vital role and outstanding contribution that both music and sound design play in the media.

The winners will be announced on Thurs 14th July.

LOST IN FRANCE (Friday, July 8th, 8:15pm)

Directed by Niall McCann, feature length documentary Lost in France explores the rise of Glasgow’s independent music scene from the 1990’s to present day, focusing on the record label Chemikal Underground and bands such as Mogwai, Franz Ferdinand and The Delgados.
Director Niall McCann, Stuart Braithwaite (Mogwai) and Stewart Henderson (Chemikal Underground) will attend the films screening, full details on which can be found here.

The film was mixed on The Main Stage here at Ardmore Sound where Garret Farrell was the re-recording mixer.

THE SIEGE OF JADOTVILLE (Saturday, July 9th, 8pm)

Directed by Richie Smyth, The Siege of Jadotville thrillingly depicts the 1961 siege of a 150-strong Irish UN battalion under Commander Patrick Quinlan (Jamie Dornan) by 3,000 Conoglese troops led by French and Belgian mercenaries working for mining companies. Full details on the films screening can be found here. Jadotville's final mix and foley was provided by Ardmore Sound.

ABSOLUTION (Friday 8th July. 14.15)

Absolution is the thrilling drama from acclaimed Finnish director Petri Kotwica currently on theatrical release in Finland. Centered around themes of guilt, remorse and forgiveness, the film is produced by Minna Virtanen for Vertigo and Irish producers Jackie Larkin and Leslie McKimm for Newgrange Pictures.

Ardmore Sound completed full sound post production on the film. Kirka Sainio was supervising sound editor and Michelle Fingleton was the sound effects editor. Eoghan McDonnell was the foley artist with Jean McGrath as foley mixer. Ken Galvin mixed the film in Centre Stage 1 and on The Main Stage at Ardmore Sound.

ARDMORE SOUND WINS IFTA AWARD FOR 'ROOM'

We’re ecstatic to report that Ardmore Sound took home the award for Best Sound at this years Film and Drama IFTA’s for our work on Lenny Abrahamson's ROOM!

Niall Brady, Ken Galvin & Steve Fanagan were in attendance to collect the award at the star studded ceremony on Saturday night, and had this to say about the win this morning:

“We are so delighted to have won the IFTA for our work on ROOM. We had an incredible time working on the film alongside our colleagues at Ardmore Sound and Screen Scene and feel very lucky to work with such a talented bunch!

Huge thanks to Nathan Nugent, Jennifer McCann, Jean McGrath, Caoimhe Doyle and Peter Blayney for all of their hard work and collaboration, and to Stephen Rennicks for his beautiful score.

Thanks to Emma Donoghue for writing such an amazing book and script. Corin Hardy's 'THE HALLOW' wins Best Horror at Empire Film Awards

We're delighted to report that Corin Hardy's ‘The Hallow’ was named Best Horror film at the Jameson Empire Awards in London on Sunday evening!

Released in cinemas across the UK and Ireland last year, this was Director Hardy's debut feature film. Hardy and actor Joseph Mawle were both in attendance to accept the award on the night.

The Hallow was produced by Joe Neurauter and Felipe Marino for Occupant Entertainment, with Fantastic Films as Irish co-producers. Full Sound Post on the film was completed here at Ardmore Sound:

'How Was Your Day' wins Best Narrative Short Award at SXSW

Damien O’Donnell’s ‘How Was Your Day?’ has been named Best Narrative Short at this years South by Southwest (SXSW) Festival!

This is the latest in a series of award nods for the moving short film, which was nominated for an IFTA Award earlier this week.

Funded by the Irish Film Board's Signatures short film scheme and Directed by Damien O'Donnell, ‘How Was Your Day?’ was adapted from a short story by Nollaig Rowan and stars Eileen Walsh of Magdalene Sisters fame.

The film underwent sound post here at Ardmore Sound last year.

JOHN CARNEY’S ‘SING STREET’ OPENS IN CINEMAS NATIONWIDE THIS THURSDAY

John Carney’s IFTA nominated new film Sing Street opens in cinemas nationwide this weekend!

The nostalgic musical, written and directed by Carney, takes us back to 1980s Dublin where the recession forces 14-year-old Cosmo out of his comfortable private school and into survival mode at the inner-city public school, where the kids are rough and the teachers are rougher. There, he turns to music and forms a ragtag band, shooting scrappy music videos, and finding refuge and love with the beautiful 16-year-old Raphina. Check out the trailer below:

MOETION FILMS WINS EUROPEAN PRODUCER OF THE YEAR AWARD FOR ‘TWO BY TWO’

We’re delighted to announce that Moetion Films, along with co-producing partners Ulysses Filmproduktion, Fabrique d’Images, & Grid, took home the European Producer Of the Year 2016 award at Cartoon Movie in Lyon last weekend for animated feature Two By Two (aka Ooops ! Noah Has Gone…)

Massive congrats to all involved on the well deserved award!

For the uninitiated, Cartoon Movie in Lyon is an annual pitching & co-pro forum for animated feature films which took place on the 2nd to the 4th of March this year.

Two by Two, which took home the Goldener Spatz award for best animation feature last June, has gone down a storm with cinema-goers since its worldwide release, bringing in a box office haul of close to 4 million.

Brie Larson wins Best Actress Oscar for 'ROOM'

Brie Larson has been named Best Actress at this years Academy awards for her role in Lenny Abrahamson's Room!

Larson took the award for her Golden Globe and BAFTA winning turn as 'Ma' in the critically lauded film, based on the book of the same name by Irish author Emma Donoghue (Oscar nominated herself in the category of Best adapted screenplay).

Room was nominated for four awards at last nights ceremony, including Best Picture and Best Director for Lenny Abrahamson.

Ardmore Sound would like to congratulate Larson on her well deserved win for her fearless performance!

Coming hot on the heels of her recent Golden Globe win and Oscar nomination, Larson nabbed the award for her blistering turn as 'Ma' in the film, based on the book of the same name by Irish author Emma Donoghue.

The nominations for this years Motion Picture Sound Editors‘ 63rd annual Golden Reel Awards have been revealed, and we’re delighted to report that our very own Niall Brady has been nominated in the category of Best Sound Editing (dialogue and ADR in a Feature film) for his work on Lenny Abrahamson’s Room.

The MPSE Golden Reel Awards recognise excellence in an array of sound editing achievement, from sound effects and foley to dialogue and ADR to music and score integration, with the winners set to be announced at a glittering awards ceremony at the Westin Bonaventure Hotel and Suites in Los Angeles on February 27th.

Speaking on his nomination this morning, Niall said: “It’s fantastic to be recognised for this award and to be a representative of the great sounding work that my colleagues and I at Ardmore Sound and Screen Scene Sound are doing, special mention must go to Steve Fanagan and Ken Galvin, the re-recording mixers on ‘Room’, and Peter Blayney.

Of course this nomination isn’t even a flight of the imagination without the incredible work of Lenny Abrahamson, Emma Donoghue, Ed Guiney and all at Element Pictures, and A24″
