'Sing Street' premieres to rave reviews at Sundance / by Keith Jordan

John Carney's latest, Sing Street received a standing ovation after its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival last night.

Rave reviews have been pouring in since the triumphant screening, a selection of highlights from which we have included below:

"It’s been a long time since I’ve seen a Sundance premiere’s fade to black bring on such rousing cheers. Conor’s music is a call to dive headlong into adventure, and the big finish is [a] cymbal-crashing crowdpleaser.” - The Guardian

"Sing Street is a sticky sweet rock ‘n roll coming-of-age 80s nostalgia teen romance fairy tale that will have you tapping your toes, dabbing your eyes and calling for an encore. Go ahead, stand up and cheer. You won’t have a better time at the movies this year." -- Screen Crush

No 21st-century filmmaker has a more intuitive understanding of movie-musical construction than Irishman John Carney,” - Variety

"If movies made money based on merit, SING STREET would out-gross THE FORCE AWAKENS. It’s a spectacular film and god willing, it’ll find the broad audience it so richly deserves. To me, this felt an awful lot like a new classic. I hope audiences agree with me." - Joblo.com

The nostalgic musical, written and directed by Carneytakes us back to 1980s Dublin where the recession forces 14-year-old Cosmo out of his comfortable private school and into survival mode at the inner-city public school, where the kids are rough and the teachers are rougher. There, he turns to music and forms a ragtag band, shooting scrappy music videos, and finding refuge and love with the beautiful 16-year-old Raphina. Check out the trailer below:
