LENNY ABRHAMSON’S ‘ROOM’ PREMIERES TO RAVE REVIEWS AT TELLURIDE by Keith Jordan

Lenny Abrahamson’s adaptation of Emma O’Donughue’s best selling book, Room, premiered at the Telluride Film Festival on Friday night to critical acclaim and multiple standing ovations.

Adapted by Donoghue from her own book, the film stars Brie Larson, Joan Allen and William H. Macy and tells the harrowing story of a young woman (Larson) and her 5-year-old son, Jack (newcomer Jacob Tremblay), who live in confinement in a 10-foot by 10-foot single room. The room is the only home Jack has ever known, but as his curiosity is building alongside his Mothers own desperation, she knows it cannot contain either indefinitely…

Critics were effusive in their praise for the film after Fridays screening, with indiewire calling it “a deeply moving and suspenseful drama that often has the power to emotionally devastate; Room is full of emotionally harrowing and wrenching moments, many of which will genuinely gut you or precipitate the flow of tears.

Justin Chang at Variety  enthused that “director Lenny Abrahamson’s inevitably telescoped but beautifully handled adaptation retains considerable emotional impact as it morphs from a taut survival thriller into a hauntingly conflicted drama of loss, mourning and gradual reawakening.”

Room” has unforgettable, must-witness performances and its soulful mother and son narrative is one of the most touching dynamics you’ll see in theaters this year,” harked the The Playlist, while Deadline declared the film to be “one of the most emotional experiences I have had in a theater in a very long time,” going on to single out young Jacob Tremblay’s performance, calling it “a lead-pipe cinch for a Best Supporting Actor nomination, and one of the finest juvenile performances I have seen.”

A sentiment seconded by Hitfix in their review: “Lenny Abrahamson guides Jack Temblay to the finest performance by a young actor since Quvenzhané Wallis in “Beasts of the Southern Wild.”

An Element Pictures and No Trace Camping production, produced by Ed Guiney and David Gross, the movie was filmed at Pinewood Studios and on location in Toronto.
